Addu Atoll

Good To Know

Good To Know

The Addu Atoll, also known as Seenu Atoll, represents the southernmost gem of the Maldives. This enchanting corner of paradise stands out not only for its geographic location – it is one of the few Maldivian atolls located south of the equator – but also for its extraordinary natural and cultural heritage. The atoll consists of a total of 23 islands, but only six are inhabited (Meedhoo, Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Gan) with a total population of about 33,000 people. The capital of the atoll, Hithadhoo, is about 530 km south of Malé, making Addu a world apart from the more touristy northern Maldives.

During World War II and the Cold War, Gan Island hosted a strategic British military base for the Royal Air Force, and its presence has left a cultural legacy still visible today. Currently, Gan boasts an international airport, making access to the atoll easier, and it is becoming an increasingly popular destination for travelers seeking exclusive adventures.

Addu is renowned for the extraordinary richness of its marine life. Here, it is possible to spot various species of dolphins and whales, making the atoll one of the best destinations for whale watching in the Maldives. Furthermore, Addu is the only Maldivian area that has not been affected by the devastating coral bleaching of 1998, thanks to protection provided by ocean currents. Its colorful, untouched reefs start just a few meters from the surface and extend to depths greater than 30 meters, offering an unparalleled diving experience.

Unique among the Maldivian atolls, Addu is home to the white tern, a bird locally known as Dhondheeni. This elegant species, with pure white feathers and a characteristic black-tipped blue beak, is a distinctive symbol of the archipelago. The Addu Atoll offers the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and culture. From fascinating historical sites to vibrant marine biodiversity, this hidden paradise beyond the equator is an unmissable destination for those seeking an authentic Maldives experience.

How to reach it: To reach the Addu Atoll, you need to fly into the capital, Malé (MLE), with an international flight. From there, the most convenient option is to take an internal flight to Gan Airport (GAN), which lasts about one and a half hours and is operated by Maldivian Airlines. Once you arrive at Gan, traveling between the atoll's islands is very easy. The main islands – such as Feydhoo, Maradhoo, and Hithadhoo – are all connected by bridges, so you can use taxis or rent a bike to explore them freely. If you wish to reach more distant islands, there are speedboats or local ferries. Alternatively, if you arrive from Fuvahmulah, you can take a speedboat that will bring you directly to Addu in about 45 minutes.
