Haa Alif Atoll

 What You Need to Know

What You Need to Know

Haa Alif Atoll is located to the north of the Maldives archipelago and offers the perfect balance of absolute tranquility, culture, and extraordinary underwater experiences. An unmissable stop is Utheemu, the birthplace of Mohammed Thakurufaanu, the national hero who led the liberation of the Maldives from Portuguese rule in the 16th century. Here, you can visit a monument dedicated to him, enriched with a library and a museum that tell the story of this legendary leader.

For diving enthusiasts, Haa Alif Atoll is a true paradise. Its channels are wider and shallower compared to other Maldivian atolls, reducing currents and making underwater explorations ideal for beginners. To the southwest of the atoll lies the mysterious Filadhoo wreck, resting at only 14 meters depth. Its structure has now merged with marine life: soft and hard corals cover the wreck, while schools of grouper, snapper, and fusiliers dance among the metal. If you're lucky, you might spot a whitetip reef shark or a group of eagle rays gliding through the water, offering a breathtaking display.

The towering cliffs of the coral reef in the atoll are another must-see: blue, pink, yellow, and green corals paint the seafloor, while sea turtles and, with a little luck, a majestic manta ray glide just above you.

How to reach Haa Alif Atoll: Of the 42 islands that make up the atoll, 14 are inhabited and can be easily accessed by seaplane or domestic flights. The atoll is accessible via a 70-minute seaplane transfer from Velana International Airport (Malé). Additionally, the opening of the new Hoarafushi Airport, located within the atoll, has further improved connectivity.

A trip to the Maldives is not just about relaxation and luxury, but also an opportunity to immerse yourself – literally – in the history and natural wonder of this incredible destination!
