Adventure and unspoiled nature

The Maldives are not only a paradise destination for relaxation and diving but also a perfect spot for trolling fishing. The Indian Ocean offers a unique experience for enthusiasts, providing an excellent balance of catch rates, affordable costs, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. While not home to giant marlins or bluefin tuna, these waters are teeming with fascinating and combative species, making them ideal for sport fishing in the Maldives.

Trolling Fishing Techniques in the Maldives

Trolling fishing in the Maldives mainly includes three techniques: live bait trolling, artificial lure trolling, and live fish trolling.

Live Bait Trolling: This technique uses small baitfish such as "mugurà" and "mushimass," which are caught using traditional methods and kept alive in special tanks aboard the dhonis, the traditional Maldivian boats. Live bait trolling is particularly effective for catching yellowfin tuna, sailfish, and kingfish.

Fishing with Bonitos: Bonitos, small striped tunas, are one of the best baits for slow trolling fishing. These fish are used as live bait to target sailfish and other predators. The technique involves using steel terminal tackle and specific hooks for a secure catch.

Artificial Lure Trolling: Offshore trolling with artificial lures is practiced along the outer reefs, where deep blue waters are the perfect habitat for many pelagic species. Lures like Rapala and PVC squid are fished at various depths, making this technique ideal for catching tuna and barracuda. The use of dhonis ensures a stable ride even in rough seas.

Trolling fishing in the Maldives is suitable for both beginners and experienced anglers. If you're looking for an authentic adventure in one of the most captivating places on earth, the Maldives offers an unforgettable experience with crystal-clear waters, unique biodiversity, and the timeless charm of local traditions.

Popping, Jigging, Catch & Release

Popping, Jigging, Catch & Release

The most popular fishing techniques in the Maldives include Popping and Jigging, both originating from Japan and perfect for targeting predators such as Giant Trevally (GT) and Dogtooth Tuna.

Popping is a surface fishing technique using artificial lures, called poppers, that mimic the movement of an injured fish. It is practiced by casting the lure near the reef and retrieving it with rhythmic movements to attract predators.

Where to practice it: Areas with significant depth changes along the coral reef, ocean passes (Kandu), and reef corners or areas with baitfish schools like fusiliers.

Jigging is a vertical fishing technique using metal lures (jigs) that sink up to 150 meters, then are retrieved with alternating movements. Ideal for targeting Dogtooth Tuna, this fishing technique requires physical endurance and a good understanding of ocean currents.

Where to practice it: Drop-offs on the outer reefs with ocean currents, passages between islands (pass), where water flow creates a prey-rich ecosystem, and inner zones for light jigging sessions at night.

The Maldives promotes responsible sport fishing, encouraging the practice of Catch & Release to protect the marine ecosystem. Using barbless hooks and appropriate release tools is essential to ensure the survival of species. If you're passionate about sport fishing and seeking a unique experience, the Maldives is the perfect destination to test your skills with these thrilling techniques!
