Good To Know

Gaafu Alifu Atoll, also known as Northern Huvadhu Atoll, is located in the southern part of the Maldives and is characterized by deep lagoons, stunning coral reefs, and channels ideal for diving and snorkeling. Gaafu Dhaalu, situated even further south, is part of the greater Huvadhoo Atoll, which is divided into two sections: Gaafu Alifu (north) and Gaafu Dhaalu (south).

The atoll is made up of 153 islands, around a dozen of which are inhabited, with others developed as resorts or left untouched. The geography of the atoll allows it to preserve unique natural environments, offering visitors the chance to explore the wildest and most pristine corners of the Maldives.

The atoll has a population of about 15,000 people, mostly residing on islands such as Kooddoo and Gadhdhoo. Local communities are primarily involved in fishing, agriculture, and tourism, all of which contribute to the region’s economic and cultural development. On the inhabited islands, transportation is mostly by foot or bicycle, as distances are short and easy to navigate.

How to get there: The main airport serving the atoll is Kooddoo Airport, which is easily accessible via domestic flights from Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. The flight takes approximately 1 hour.

Once in Kooddoo, visitors can take speedboats or ferries to reach various islands across the atoll. Travel time ranges from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the final destination.
