Good To Know

Laamu Atoll is one of the most captivating in the Maldives, renowned for both its natural and cultural heritage. With 88 islands, of which 11 are inhabited, Laamu is characterized by unspoiled landscapes, rich marine biodiversity, and vibrant local traditions. The waters of Laamu are famous for their pristine coral reefs, home to vibrant tropical fish, manta rays, and whale sharks—offering snorkelers and divers a truly unique underwater experience. The limited tourist influx helps preserve the ecosystem, making underwater explorations even more enchanting.

Beyond its reefs, Laamu also features wetlands and mangrove areas, which provide habitats for many exotic bird species and unique flora. The atoll is also a cultural hub of Maldivian tradition. Visiting the inhabited islands allows travelers to witness the daily life of fishermen, discover local crafts such as the traditional Kasabu Viyun weaving, and savor authentic island cuisine. A must-try dish is Golha Riha, a spicy tuna curry. One symbolic place in the atoll is Paree Fengandu, a natural pond shrouded in local legend and considered a mystical site. For movie buffs, Laamu also has a connection to Hollywood—some scenes from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were filmed here, making it a fun destination for fans of the saga.

Laamu Atoll is strongly committed to environmental protection, with active initiatives aimed at preserving the archipelago’s fragile ecosystem. Research and recycling centers welcome visitors interested in learning more about sustainability and marine conservation.

How to get there: Reaching Laamu Atoll is relatively easy but requires a domestic transfer within the Maldives. The fastest option is to take a domestic flight from Velana International Airport (Malé) to Kadhdhoo Airport (KDO), located within the atoll. Once you land, the most common way to reach the various islands is by speedboat or dhoni, with travel times ranging from 10 to 60 minutes, depending on your final destination.
