Atollo di Alifu Dhaalu

Good To Know

Good To Know

The Alifu Dhaalu Atoll makes up the southern part of the Ari Atoll and consists of a total of 49 islands, with only 10 inhabited. Instead of the classic coral reefs, here you'll find underwater channels (passes) and shallow sandbars (shoals), ideal habitats for observing the extraordinary marine biodiversity up close. On the western side of the atoll, the coral formations are larger and more compact, able to withstand the force of the southwest monsoon waves. On the eastern side, however, the underwater landscape is dominated by smaller reefs and more delicate corals.

If your dream is to spot a whale shark, the gentle giant of the ocean, the area of Dhidhdhoo Beyru, at the southwestern tip of the atoll, is one of the best places in the world to see it in its natural habitat. Additionally, some islands also have cultural interest: on the island of Ariadhoo, artifacts dating back to the Maldivian Buddhist period have been found, while an ancient mosque was discovered on the island of Fenfushi.

How to reach it: The atoll is located about 75 km southwest of Malé and can be reached either by seaplane in about 25-30 minutes, or by a domestic flight + speedboat (20-minute flight to Maamigili + 15-30-minute boat transfer). Alternatively, there is also the option of taking a speedboat directly from Malé in 1.5-2 hours or the public ferry, which is more affordable but slower with fewer trips available.
