Good To Know

The Alif Alif Atoll, also known as Ari Atholhu Uthuruburi, occupies the northern part of the large Ari Atoll, while the southern part is identified as the Alif Dhaal Atoll.

This atoll consists of 33 islands, of which only 8 are inhabited, with a total population of about 6,000 people. Among the main islands are Bodufolhudhoo, Feridhoo, Himandhoo, Maalhos, Mathiveri, Rasdhoo, Thoddoo, and Ukulhas. The administrative heart of the atoll is Rasdhoo, located less than 60 km from Malé, and it is a popular destination for both its authenticity and its proximity to spectacular diving sites, where visitors can spot the impressive hammerhead sharks in their natural habitat. North of Rasdhoo lies Thoddoo, an island off the beaten path: there are no resorts here, but it plays a key role in the Maldivian economy due to its fertile land, perfect for growing watermelons, melons, bananas, avocados, cucumbers, eggplants, and chili peppers. Many islands within this atoll show traces of ancient settlements, with archaeological findings that attest to the presence of the Buddhist period in the Maldives.

How to get there: Alif Alif Atoll is located about 60 km from Malé and is easily reachable from Velana International Airport (MLE) with several transport options:

  • Seaplane is the fastest and most scenic choice! The flight takes about 20-30 minutes and offers breathtaking views of the islands and coral reefs. This option is usually available for those staying in the atoll’s resorts.
  • Speedboats depart from the port of Malé and take about 1.5 - 2 hours to reach the main islands such as Rasdhoo, Ukulhas, and Mathiveri. It is a more affordable option compared to the seaplane and is often arranged by hotels and guesthouses.
  • Public ferries are the cheapest option but also the slowest (taking about 5 or 6 hours)
