Kaafu Atoll

Good To Know

Good To Know

In the heart of the Maldives archipelago lies Kaafu Atoll, a true gateway to the ocean's beauty, composed of four natural atolls: North Malé, South Malé, Gaafaru, and Kaashidhoo.

With 107 islands, 11 of which are inhabited—including Dhiffushi, Maafushi, Gulhi, and Thulusdhoo—the atoll is a perfect blend of tradition, culture, and natural beauty. The capital, Malé, is the administrative and commercial hub, but if you're looking for a more authentic experience, Thulusdhoo is the island that represents the more industrialized aspect of the atoll, while still maintaining its local charm. Here, among its lively streets, you can breathe in the true essence of Maldivian life. Less than 30 km from the capital, the island of Maafushi, which hosts a prison, has a history marked by the devastating 2004 tsunami. Today, however, it is one of the islands with a growing economy, despite the scars of the past. For culture lovers, there are islands like Huraa, with an 18th-century mosque, and Himmafushi, known for its bustling main street filled with souvenir shops and local handicrafts, including beautiful fish sculptures made of rosewood. Not far from here, a narrow sandbar connects Gaamaadhoo, once home to a penitentiary, and Dhiffushi, a paradisiacal island frequented by those staying in nearby resorts. Kaafu Atoll is the perfect place to combine nature, history, and Maldivian tradition, offering unforgettable experiences at every corner.

How to reach it: The main route is to fly to the capital, Malé, which is the international hub of the Maldives. From there, you can easily reach the other islands of the atoll by seaplane (regular flights are available from Malé to islands like Maafushi or Dhiffushi), speedboat, or public ferry. Alternatively, if you're staying at a resort, it's likely that the hotel offers private transfers by seaplane or boat.
