Guest House: why choose them

Guest House: why choose them

Guest Houses in the Maldives offer an authentic and immersive alternative to luxury resorts. These small accommodations, such as hotels, B&Bs, or guesthouses, are mainly located on the local fishing islands, allowing travelers to experience Maldivian culture up close. While there are guest houses in Hulhumale and Malé, the most popular ones with tourists are found on local islands scattered throughout the atolls.

Staying in a guest house in the Maldives means experiencing the archipelago in a more genuine and familial way, with the opportunity to connect directly with locals and discover the true spirit of the Maldives. It is an ideal choice for those seeking authentic experiences, wishing to explore the natural wonders of the islands every day, and looking for a more affordable vacation compared to luxury resorts.

However, this type of stay comes with some differences compared to resorts, which should be considered before departure:

Dress Code and Designated Beaches: Unlike private resorts, it is not allowed to wear swimsuits outside of the designated beaches (Bikini Beach) on local islands, which are typically a 5-10 minute walk from the guest house. Some accommodations do not have private beaches, so it’s a good idea to check in advance.

Boat Excursions: To overcome the distance from the beaches, many guest houses organize daily trips in dhonis (traditional Maldivian boats) to deserted islands, sandbars, or fishing spots. Some of these excursions are free, others charge a fee, whereas resort activities are generally always paid.

Alcohol Restrictions: As the Maldives is a Muslim country, the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited on local islands. However, in resorts, cocktails, beer, and wine are available without restrictions.

Meal Times: While resorts offer flexible dining hours, meals in guest houses are served at set times, often in a family-style atmosphere with other guests, creating a convivial environment.

Some guest houses are located on larger islands, with populations of up to 2,000 people. This may require crossing streets with motorbikes, cars, and mosques. Those seeking a more peaceful experience might prefer guest houses on smaller, less crowded islands.

Transfers to local islands are mainly by private speedboat or public ferries, which are cheaper but slower. Some guest houses also offer transfers by seaplane, which is quicker but more expensive. Public ferries may take 4 to 6 hours, with a stop in Malé, making the journey longer and less comfortable, especially if the sea is rough.

Staying in a guest house in the Maldives is a unique experience for those wanting to explore the archipelago authentically, immerse themselves in local culture, and save money compared to luxury resorts. However, before booking, it’s important to evaluate all logistical aspects to choose the best option for your needs and make the most of this adventure in the heart of the Indian Ocean.
